Lou Sullivan was the first FTM transsexual man I ever met. The year was 1988, and I was exploring the idea of medical transition with fear, excitement and a startled yet steadfast focus. I’d seen Lou’s small ad in the back pages of the lesbian sex magazine, “On Our Backs” advertising a book for “female-to-male crossdressers and transsexuals”, and a group that met quarterly with meetings and a newsletter – the group that was FTMI in its earliest incarnation. Before the “International’ was added and the acronym “FTM” became a kind of hip cultural currency in the queer community of San Francisco and beyond. These were the early years, and Lou was the founder and driving, energetic man behind the scenes and in front of the group.
